About Beizhen Temple

The state temple to the spirit of Yiwulü Mountain, the northern one of China's five guardian mountains, founded in 594 and rebuilt under the Ming dynasty from 1370. Its halls climb a hillside along a 240 m axis, from a stone arch and gate through the main hall to the rear sleeping hall, with bell and drum towers, stele pavilions and 56 steles of the Yuan, Ming and Qing periods. The provincial heritage department calls it the best-preserved large temple of the five guardian mountains, and the foundations of a Qianlong-era travelling palace lie to its east.
