About Zhalan Cemetery (Tomb of Matteo Ricci)

Regarded as the oldest Christian cemetery in China, it was granted by the Wanli Emperor in 1610–11 for the burial of the Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci, and later Jesuit scholars of the imperial court were also laid to rest here. Ricci's tombstone, inscribed in Chinese and Latin, stands between those of Adam Schall von Bell and Ferdinand Verbiest, near the tombstones of dozens of other missionaries, all set up again after desecration during the Boxer uprising and the Cultural Revolution.
