About Caoxi Temple, Anning

A Chan Buddhist temple at the foot of Cong Hill, 1.5 km south of Anning's hot-spring town of Wenquan, probably founded in the Dali Kingdom period by monks devoted to the patriarch Huineng. Its main hall, the double-eaved Baohua Pavilion, was restored in 1694 and houses a wooden Buddhist trinity that scholars have dated variously from the Southern Song to the early Ming. Local legend holds that once every 60 years the Mid-Autumn moon shines through a small round window onto the face of the main Buddha.
