About Shihezi
Shihezi, named after a stony-bottomed stream, was built from the early 1950s by soldiers of the army's 22nd Corps who stayed on to farm, and it remains the seat of the 8th Division of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (Bingtuan). The planned city of broad, tree-lined avenues won a UN-Habitat award in 2000 for improving its living environment. Its first buildings, among them the corps headquarters that now houses the Bingtuan Military Reclamation Museum, are protected as national heritage.
