About Shennongjia

Shennongjia is a forestry district rather than a city: a high, thinly peopled block of mountain forest in western Hubei, named after the legendary Shennong, who tasted herbs to find medicines. Its forests, a World Heritage site since 2016, shelter golden snub-nosed monkeys and gave rise to stories of the yeren, a wild man of the hills. Muyu is the base for Shennong Peak and the Guanmenshan gorge, and the Dajiuhu wetland lies in the west.
