About Yunfu

Yunfu is a hilly, largely rural city south of the West River, known for working marble and granite brought in from across China and abroad. Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch of Chan (Zen) Buddhism, was born in what is now Xinxing County, and Guo'en Temple, founded there in 683, is where he died in 713. Near Luoding, the Longkan Cave Inscriptions of 699 are the oldest surviving cliff inscription in Guangdong, written with characters created under Empress Wu Zetian.
