About Xinzhai Jiana Mani Stone Pile

A huge pile of carved mani stones on a hillside at Xinzhai, on the edge of Gyêgu (Jiegu), Yushu's main town, begun, by tradition, in the late 18th century by the first Jiana lama of Jiegu Monastery and added to by pilgrims ever since. It now covers about 20,000 square metres, roughly 270 m long, 80 m wide and three to four metres high, carved with mantras, sutras and images of Buddhist figures, with prayer-wheel corridors and chapels added since the 1980s. It was damaged in the 2010 Yushu earthquake and repaired afterwards.
