About Zhangguying Village

A clan village of the Zhang family below Bijia Hill in south-eastern Yueyang County, where connected houses built from the Ming and extended through the Qing form three great blocks, Dangdamen, Wangjiaduan and Shangxinwu, with 1,732 rooms, 206 skylit courtyards and 62 lanes over more than 50,000 m². Each hall is built around its courtyards and opens into the next, so much of the village can be crossed under cover, and its drains, light wells and fire-water pools still work; descendants of the founder Zhang Guying still live here.
