About Wanfotang Grottoes

A Buddhist cave temple cut into a cliff on the north bank of the Daling River, begun in 499 under the Northern Wei dynasty and among the oldest grottoes in north-east China. Sixteen caves and nearly 500 carvings survive in a west and an east group, including a 3 m cross-legged Maitreya in West Cave 6 and the Yuan Jing inscription, a well-known piece of Northern Wei calligraphy. A Ming-dynasty pagoda stands above the east group, and the site lies between Fu hill and the river.
