About Yantai Hill

Yantai Hill is a small hill on the waterfront in the city centre, named after the beacon tower built on it in 1398 to warn of pirate raids, which gave the city its name. After Yantai was opened as a treaty port in 1861, consulates, customs offices, banks and churches were built on and around it, and the surviving group of 38 buildings, listed nationally in 2006, is described as the most complete former consular quarter in China. Some buildings now house small museums, such as the port-opening exhibition and the Bing Xin memorial hall, and the hill also has a lighthouse and a long evergreen walkway.
