About Tongli Ancient Town

A canal town of more than a thousand years on the edge of Wujiang, crossed by waterways and old stone bridges and named in 2003 among the first ten historic and cultural towns of China. Its best-known sight is the Retreat and Reflection Garden of 1885–1887, part of the Classical Gardens of Suzhou World Heritage Site; in the old town too is Gengle Hall, a house founded in the 1440s and rebuilt under the Qing, with a lotus pond, old pines and osmanthus in its garden. Luoxing Islet in the lake holds Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian shrines.
