About Saihanba National Forest Park

A planted-forest park on the high Saihanba plateau in northern Weichang County, once part of the Qing dynasty's Mulan imperial hunting ground. Farming and logging had stripped the land bare before a state forest farm began replanting it in 1962 with a founding team of 369 people; today there are larch and spruce plantations, lakes, grassland, forest walks and an exhibition hall at the farm's headquarters town. The planters won the UN Environment Programme's Champions of the Earth award in 2017, and a 2023 report put the part of the farm open to visitors at about 1.35 per cent of its area.
