About Tongxin Great Mosque

Regarded as Ningxia's oldest and largest mosque, it is built in Chinese style with Islamic decoration on a 7 m brick platform; it probably began as a Yuan-period Buddhist temple, became a mosque in the early Ming and was rebuilt several times, notably in 1791 and 1907. In October 1936 the Red Army's Western Expedition held the founding meeting of the Yuhai County Hui Autonomous Government here, and the mosque is counted as part of the Red Army Western Expedition Memorial Park. The park's memorial hall, opened in 2006, covers the expedition and the 1936 visit of Edgar Snow and George Hatem to the Red Army at Yuwangbao, in today's Tongxin county.
