About Tongnan Great Buddha Temple
A temple at the foot of Dingming Hill on the Fu River just west of Tongnan town, built against a cliff carved from the Sui to the Republican era with about 126 niches and more than 900 Buddhist, Daoist and Confucian figures. Its centrepiece is a gilded seated Buddha 18.43 m high, begun in the Tang and finished in the Song, sheltered by the seven-eaved Great Buddha Pavilion; the temple also keeps Guanyin and Jade Emperor halls and an 1843 couplet by Zeng Guofan.
