About Taku Forts (Dagukou Forts)
Coastal forts at the mouth of the Hai River, rebuilt and extended several times under the Qing, which were the main battleground of the Dagu battles of 1858, 1859 and 1860 in the Second Opium War and saw fighting again in 1900. Most of the forts were demolished under the Boxer Protocol; the restored Wei fort on the south bank, opened to visitors in 1997, survives beside a memorial park. A museum in a rust-coloured steel building has galleries on the forts, the wars fought here and the 1901 protocol, and a 3D cinema.
