About Rishe Garden (Qiao Garden)
Built in 1574 for the Ming official Chen Yingfang and later called Qiao Garden after a Qing salt commissioner who owned it, Rishe Garden is regarded as the oldest surviving classical garden in northern Jiangsu. Restored in 1990 after a Qing painting of the garden, it packs a central hall, pavilions on a rockery crowned by three stone 'swords', a stream and an old cypress said to date from the Ming into a small space; the opera star Mei Lanfang stayed in one of its pavilions in 1956.
