About Canglang Pavilion
The oldest of Suzhou's surviving classical gardens, laid out in the mid-1040s by the Song poet Su Shunqin on the site of a Five Dynasties garden and named after a line in the Songs of Chu about the clear and muddy waters of the Canglang. The garden centres on a wooded earth-and-rock hill, with halls and covered walks around it and a gallery along the canal outside that 'borrows' the water into the view. It also has a hall of stone-carved portraits of famous people linked with Suzhou and a great variety of patterned lattice windows, and is part of the Classical Gardens of Suzhou World Heritage Site.
