About Songjiang Tang Sutra Pillar

This octagonal stone pillar, inscribed with a Buddhist dharani sutra and set up in 859 under the Tang dynasty, is regarded by Shanghai's cultural heritage authorities as the oldest structure standing above ground in the city. About 9.3 m tall in 21 stacked tiers, it is carved with crouching lions, coiled dragons, bodhisattvas and the Four Heavenly Kings, and was taken apart, repaired and reassembled in 1963–64 after long standing half-buried in an earth mound. It stands in the grounds of Zhongshan Primary School, which is not open to visitors.

How to get to Songjiang Tang Sutra Pillar

In Songjiang District, roughly an hour from central Shanghai on Metro Line 9 to Zuibaichi Park station, then about 20 minutes on foot to Zhongshan Primary School off Zhongshan East Road; the pillar stands well inside the school grounds, so it may not be visible from the gate.
