About Shangqiu Ancient City

The walled city of Guide prefecture, built in 1511 after floods destroyed the earlier town, whose brick inner wall (about 4.4 km round), broad moat-lake and outer earthen rampart give it the 'round outside, square inside' plan of a Chinese coin. Inside the four gates the old grid of lanes survives, much restored since the 2010s, with the prefectural Confucian temple, the Mu family courtyard house and the Zhuang Hui Tang residence of the late-Ming writer Hou Fangyu, while outside lie the Ebo (Fire God) Terrace and the rebuilt Yingtian Academy. Several older cities, including the Zhou-dynasty capital of the Song state, lie buried beneath and around it.
