About Beiyue Temple

A walled temple compound in the old town of Quyang, built for worship of the spirit of the Northern Peak; emperors sacrificed to the Northern Peak from here until 1660, when the rite moved to Mount Heng at Hunyuan in Shanxi. Its main building, the Yuan-dynasty Dening Hall, is described as the largest surviving Yuan timber hall and has wall paintings of heavenly figures traditionally attributed to the Tang painter Wu Daozi. The grounds also hold a stele gallery of over a hundred inscribed stones and a small exhibition hall on the temple's history.
