About Southern Dynasty Tomb Sculptures, Nanjing

Winged lions (bixie), qilin, steles on stone tortoises and fluted columns that once lined the spirit ways to the tombs of Southern Dynasties emperors and princes of the 5th and 6th centuries, still standing in the open at sites scattered across Nanjing's eastern and southern suburbs, mostly in Qixia and Jiangning districts. The densest group is at Ganjiaxiang in Qixia District, where the carvings from the tombs of three Liang-dynasty princes, Xiao Xiu, Xiao Dan and Xiao Hui, stand within a few hundred metres of each other, Xiao Xiu's ensemble beside the gate of a primary school and the other two in a small park. The winged lion is Nanjing's city emblem, modelled on the one at the tomb of Xiao Jing about a kilometre to the south-west.
