About Jinling Scriptural Press
A Buddhist publishing house founded in 1866 by the lay scholar Yang Wenhui (Yang Renshan), often called the father of China's modern Buddhist revival, who taught figures such as the monk Taixu and the scholar Zhang Taiyan here. It still makes Buddhist books entirely by hand, carving the text on woodblocks, printing it and thread-binding the volumes, a craft listed as national intangible heritage in 2006 and included in China's block-printing entry on the UNESCO intangible heritage list in 2009. Staff can be seen at work in its craft display area.
