About Former Nanjing Office of the Eighth Route Army

A two-storey 1930s Western-style house that belonged to Zhang Boling, president of Nankai University, and was rented in August 1937 as the Nanjing office of the Communist-led Eighth Route Army, after the Communists and Nationalists agreed to cooperate against Japan. Headed by Li Kenong, with Ye Jianying and Bo Gu among those working here, the office secured the release of hundreds of Communist political prisoners and helped prepare the formation of the New Fourth Army before leaving for Wuhan in November 1937. It has been a memorial hall since 1987 and is now a branch of the Meiyuan New Village Memorial Hall.
