About Mount Xiqiao

An extinct volcano of 72 peaks rising from the Pearl River Delta plain in Nanhai District, covering 14 km² and topped by the 346 m Dacheng Peak, with waterfalls, springs and wooded paths. It was a major Neolithic stone-tool workshop and later a centre of Daoism and Ming–Qing Confucian scholarship; today its sights include a 61.9 m seated Guanyin statue on Daxian Peak, Baiyun Cave and a lion-dance and martial-arts hall named after Wong Fei-hung. At Shiyanyan on the mountain, a nationally protected quarry worked from the Song to the Qing dynasty has left huge man-made caverns, some flooded, with stone pillars and tool marks.
