About Dana Temple and the Stupas of Gesar's Thirty Generals

A Yelpa Kagyu monastery on the slopes of Dana (Horse-Ear) Mountain in the far north-west of Nangqian County, near the border with the Tibet Autonomous Region, said to be the only surviving monastery of its school and to have begun as a Bon temple. It is closely tied to the epic of King Gesar, and in two cliff caves above it stand 37 small stone-and-mud stupas known as the Thirty Generals of Gesar, whose relics were radiocarbon-dated to the Song dynasty, about 1115. The monastery reopened in 1981 and was listed with the stupas as a national heritage unit in 2006.
