About Guanlin Temple

The traditional burial place of the head of Guan Yu, the Three Kingdoms general later worshipped as a god, which Cao Cao is said to have buried here with princely honours in 220. Behind the temple, rebuilt from 1592 with Ming and Qing halls along a long axis, rises the tomb mound; it is traditionally regarded as the only Guan Yu temple entitled to the rank of 'lin', a term otherwise used for the Confucius cemetery in Qufu. Guan Yu's cult and its temple fair are a listed national intangible heritage, and the complex is one of the 'Guan Yu Cultural Sites' put forward for World Heritage.
