About Cuan Longyan Stele

Erected in 458, the Cuan Longyan Stele is the 3.38 m memorial stone of Cuan Longyan, a regional governor from the Cuan clan that dominated eastern Yunnan for centuries. Its 904-character inscription traces the family's origins and offices in regular script with clerical touches, and the rounded head is carved with a dragon, a tiger, the Vermilion Bird and sun and moon symbols. Together with the smaller Cuan Baozi Stele in Qujing it is one of the 'Two Cuan' steles prized by Chinese calligraphers.
