About Rawak Stupa
The ruins of a Buddhist temple of the ancient Khotan kingdom on the sandy edge of the Taklamakan north-east of Hotan, centred on a large domed stupa on a cross-shaped base inside a walled courtyard. The courtyard walls were once lined with colossal clay statues and reliefs; Aurel Stein uncovered 91 of the statues in 1901, and by his return in 1906 treasure-hunters had destroyed most of them. Scholars date the temple to roughly the 3rd to 7th centuries, and a boardwalk leads around the remains.
