About Songshan Battlefield

Songshan, a mountain above the Nu (Salween) River, was held and heavily fortified by Japanese forces from 1942, cutting the Burma Road, until the Chinese Expeditionary Force took it in September 1944 after months of fighting. The battlefield park preserves bunkers, trenches, shell craters and the tunnel dug to blow up the main Japanese strongpoint, plus a cemetery for Chinese soldiers of the 103rd Division. The listed site also takes in Japanese wartime sites in Longling town, such as the former headquarters and the Dongjiagou 'comfort station', some now exhibition halls.
