About Liuhou Park and Liu Zongyuan Shrine

A city-centre park laid out from 1906 around the shrine to Liu Zongyuan, the Tang poet and essayist who governed Liuzhou and died here in 819. The shrine, founded in 822 and rebuilt in 1987 to a Qing plan, keeps about fifty steles from the Song dynasty onwards, among them the Lizi Stele of 1217 with a poem by Han Yu in Su Shi's calligraphy. Behind it is a memorial tomb holding Liu's robes and cap, and the park is a popular gathering place for local musicians and dancers.
