About Taozhu Fortress Town
A Ming coastal fort town near the East China Sea in south-east Linhai, built in 1443 as one of the garrison posts raised against wokou pirates; Qi Jiguang wiped out a pirate band here in 1560. Its walls, about 1.4 km round and 4.5 m high, survive with three gates and their barbicans, and inside the lanes keep mostly Qing-dynasty houses, an ancestral hall and a Guandi temple in a town that is still lived in and busy on market days. Nearby, the rice fields of Taojiang Shisanzhu, cut into islets by the river, and the volcanic rock landscape of the Linhai geopark make a pleasant side trip.
