About Liuzi Temple & Liu Zongyuan Cultural Area
A riverside quarter on the west bank of the Xiao River in Lingling, the old town of Yongzhou, built around the places where the Tang writer Liu Zongyuan lived for ten years in exile from 805. At its centre is Liuzi Temple, founded in 1056 and moved in 1144 to its present site where the Yu Stream meets the Xiao; the three-courtyard hall with its opera stage dates from an 1877 rebuilding and holds the 'Lizi Stele', a text by Han Yu written out by Su Shi. The old Liuzi Street, the Yu Stream and the pools and hills Liu described in his 'Eight Records of Yongzhou' make up the rest of the area.
