About Mount Mao (Maoshan)
A low range on the Jurong–Jintan border, rising to 372.5 metres at Damao Peak, revered as the birthplace of the Shangqing school of Taoism and called by Taoists the 'eighth grotto-heaven and first blessed land'. The two main halls of the Maoshan Taoist Temple are the Jiuxiao Wanfu Palace on the summit and the Yuanfu Wanning Palace below Jijin Peak, where a 33-metre copper statue of Laozi has stood in the open since 1997. Other temples rebuilt since the 2000s are spread across the scenic area.
