About Dongpo Chibi

Dongpo Chibi is a complex of pavilions and halls on a reddish-brown rock bluff in the north-west of Huangzhou, which once stood on the north bank of the Yangtze before silt left it several hundred metres from the river. The poet Su Shi (Su Dongpo), exiled to Huangzhou in the Northern Song, wrote his Red Cliff Rhapsody and other famous pieces here, and a prefect renamed the site Dongpo Chibi in the late Kangxi reign. Most of the buildings seen today date from a restoration in 1868, and 139 stone tablets carved from rubbings of Su's handwriting are set into the pavilions.
