About Qing Yan Garden

A garden in central Qingjiangpu that grew from a lodge set up in 1678 by the river-works chief Jin Fu on the site of a Ming revenue office, and from 1729 belonged to the office of the Director-General of the Southern Rivers, who ran the river and canal works of the region. Its one original building is the Hefang Academy of 1750, built for the Qianlong Emperor's southern tour and flanked by stele pavilions and a stele corridor on the history of river works; the other halls, pavilions, Guandi temple and rockeries are later rebuildings in traditional style. Rated 4A in 2023, it is a compact garden of ponds, lotus and old trees.
