About Southern Song Capital Lin'an & Deshou Palace Museum

Remains of Lin'an, capital of the Southern Song from 1138 to 1276, lie buried beneath central Hangzhou, the palace area on Phoenix Hill more than 3 m down, with an imperial street that ran north through the city. The main place to see them is the Deshou Palace Site Museum, opened in 2022 over the excavated palace where the emperors Gaozong and Xiaozong lived after abdicating, with a reconstructed hall and digital displays over the foundations. Nearby, the Imperial Ancestral Temple site is a public park with column bases on show, and site displays along Zhongshan Road show excavated sections of the Imperial Street.
