About Foshan Ancestral Temple

A Daoist temple to the Northern Emperor (Beidi), the water god revered as Foshan's protector, founded in the Northern Song (1078–1085), rebuilt in 1372 and restored throughout in 1899. Its Ming and Qing buildings include the Wanfu Stage of 1658, regarded as the largest old opera stage in the Lingnan region, the Lingying archway and the main hall with bronze and cast-iron ritual objects, all richly decorated with carving and ceramic ridge figures. The complex is now a national first-grade museum that also takes in a Confucian temple and halls devoted to the martial artists Wong Fei-hung and Ip Man.
