About West Lake (Eryuan)

A small highland lake at the northern foot of the Cangshan range, about 2 km² at 1,968 m, whose water drains south into Erhai Lake. Six villages and seven islets are scattered across it, and the lake and its reed beds are protected as a national wetland park, home to birds such as the purple swamphen. The Ming traveller Xu Xiake rated its scenery above that of Hangzhou's West Lake.
