About Lu Family Residences, Dongyang

A large complex of Ming and Qing mansions and halls on the east side of Dongyang, built by the Lu clan, who settled here in the Southern Song and prospered after a family member passed the highest imperial examination in the early 15th century. The buildings, covering about 2.5 hectares, are grouped around the clan's main ancestral hall and three branch compounds, of which the Suyong Hall complex is the centrepiece, and are rich in the wood carving Dongyang is known for. The scenic area also takes in a street of intangible-heritage workshops and Luzhai Old Street, about 500 m of shops selling carving and old building parts.
