About Zhuotong Salt Wells
Daying is where the zhuotong well, a small-bore salt well drilled by percussion with an iron bit on a wooden frame and lined with large bamboo tubes, was developed in the Qingli era of the Northern Song dynasty (1041–1048). It is often described as the forerunner of modern deep drilling for brine, oil and gas. An exhibition hall in Zhuotongjing town shows the tools used to drill the wells and make salt.
