About Yangpu Ancient Salt Field

A salt field of more than a thousand flat-topped volcanic-rock slabs, each cut with a shallow trough and a thin rim, laid out on the shore at Yantian village on the Yangpu peninsula. Seawater fills the stones at high tide and evaporates at low tide, leaving salt to be gathered by hand, a method in use here since at least the Song dynasty that a few villagers still follow. It was listed as a national heritage site in 2013 and as a national industrial heritage site in 2024.
