About Modern Buildings on Zhongshan Square in Dalian
Zhongshan Square is a round plaza 213 m across, with ten streets radiating from it, at the centre of old Dalian; the Russians laid it out around 1899 as Nikolayevskaya Square, and most of the buildings around it date from 1908 to 1936, when Japan administered the leased territory. The ring of Gothic- and Renaissance-style buildings is now mostly banks, plus the Dalian Hotel in the former Yamato Hotel, so most visitors walk round the outside. The national listing covers the former Dalian civil administration office, the former Bank of Chōsen branch and the Yamato Hotel, with a fourth building elsewhere in the city.
