About Chongqing City Walls (Tongyuanmen and Dongshuimen)

Surviving stretches of the walls of old Chongqing, rebuilt in 1373 under the Ming on earlier foundations and set along the cliffs above the Yangtze and Jialing rivers; of the 17 gates only three open gates and one closed gate remain, as much of the circuit was pulled down from the 1920s. The protected sections are at Tongyuanmen, where a city-wall park with rebuilt towers opened in 2005, and at Dongshuimen above the Yangtze beside the Huguang Guild Hall. A 15 km walking route around the Yuzhong peninsula follows the old wall line.
