Why go to Sayram Lake
Sayram Lake, roughly 450 km² at about 2,070 m in the northern Tian Shan, is Xinjiang's largest and highest alpine lake, fed by rain, glacial meltwater and groundwater and ringed by steppe. A 79 km road circles the shore, and around the lake lie some 2,800 ancient tombs – stone cairns, stone-slab graves and earth mounds from the Bronze Age to the Sui and Tang – protected as a national heritage site. A large new visitor centre opened in January 2025.
The story
The lake sits on the old northern Silk Road, and its name comes from Kazakh, usually rendered as a blessing or good wish for travellers. The Taoist monk Qiu Chuji, passing through in the 13th century, wrote of snow peaks mirrored in the water and called it a 'heavenly pool'.
What to see at Sayram Lake
- Songshutou 松树头: A viewpoint stop at the southern end of the lake and the first call on the shuttle line from the south gate, with a high outlook over the water.
- West Sea Grassland 西海草原: Open steppe sloping to the western shore, the stop for wildflowers in early summer and for walking down to the water.
- Wusun Ancient Tombs 乌孙古冢: Stone mounds on the grass, named for the Wusun, an ancient steppe people; one of the burial sites among the lake's roughly 2,800 tombs.
- Dianjiangtai 点将台: A hilltop stop tied by tradition to a Mongol commander mustering his troops; climb it for a wide view over the lake.
How to visit Sayram Lake
The shuttle line starts at the south or east gate and calls at about 15 stops along some 64 km of lakeshore, among them Songshutou, West Sea Grassland, the Wusun tombs and Dianjiangtai; guides report that shuttle seats are booked at the east and north gate visitor centres, not at the south gate. A half-day takes in a few stops, while a full day lets you ride the whole line, getting off wherever the light is good. Self-drivers follow the 79 km ring road instead, and if you arrive from Yining you will cross the Guozigou gorge on the G30, spanned by a high cable-stayed bridge.
How to get to Sayram Lake
The lake lies beside the G30 expressway between Bole and Yining, about an hour by road from Bole and roughly 1.5–2 hours from Yining. Buses and tour minibuses run from both towns, and most visitors hire a car for the day or join a day tour.
Where to stay
Lodging right at the lake is limited and mostly basic, with a large resort reportedly under construction beside the scenic area. Most visitors base themselves in Bole, about an hour away, or in Yining if they are touring the Ili valley.
What to eat
- Whitefish 高白鲑: A cold-water fish introduced to the once fishless lake in the 1990s, now farmed in the area and served in restaurants around the lake and in Bole.
- Hand-grabbed lamb 手抓肉: Boiled lamb on the bone eaten with the hands, a staple of the Kazakh and Mongol herding families of Bortala.
- Lamb offal soup with naan 羊杂汤配馕: A hot bowl of lamb offal broth with bread, a common road stop at Lucaogou town on the way between the lake and Yining.
Tips for visiting Sayram Lake
- Entry is by real-name booking through the scenic area's official WeChat account; reserve ahead in July and August, and carry your passport for the check.
- The lake sits at about 2,070 m and is cool even in summer, so bring a windproof layer; it freezes from about December, with ice 1–2 m thick, and thaws by May. In the cold season the shuttle and some stops may run a reduced service, so confirm before you go.
- Self-drivers pay a separate vehicle fee on top of entry, and the scheme was restructured in August 2026, so check current terms; the alternative is the scenic-area shuttle, which has been reorganised since late 2025 and now departs once enough passengers have checked in.
