About Baiyang Lake
Baiyang Lake is the largest freshwater lake in northern China, a patchwork of shallow lakes, channels, reed beds and lotus ponds within the Xiong'an New Area. The usual visit is by boat from the main tourist wharf, where clean-energy 'water bus' boats link the garden and island sites, drifting through the reeds and lotus to lake-island villages where local restaurants cook fish and other lake produce. The lake sheltered guerrillas fighting the Japanese occupation during the war and is the setting of well-known Chinese stories such as Little Soldier Zhang Ga.
How to get to Baiyang Lake
On the lake's eastern shore in the Xiong'an New Area, about 50 km east of central Baoding; high-speed trains from Beijing West reach Xiong'an station in about an hour, and the lake wharf is then about 16 km to the south-west.
